Nutrition and Dietetics

The department offers two majors in
Dietetics and Community Nutrition, and a minor in Nutrition

bread ringStudents graduate with either a Bachelor of Science in Community Nutrition or a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics. The Community Nutrition major may opt to meet the requirements to become a Licensed Nutritionist (LN) in North Dakota upon graduation. Dietetics majors complete a coordinated program which encompasses both the academic requirements and the experiential training required before graduates may take the national credentialing examination required to become a Registered Dietitian (RD).

Individualized attention is one of the features of the Department most often mentioned by its graduates. Strong advisement and mentoring programs assist students in pursuit of their educational goals. Students are encouraged to becomes members of professional associations and the Student Association of Nutrition and Dietetics (SAND).


Departmental faculty are experienced, dedicated, and highly qualified. They have worked in a wide range of settings within the profession and are active leaders and participants in community service and professional associations. Departmental faculty have identified quality teaching and the success of every student as their highest priorities.

CURRICULUM

cookie trayBoth majors complete courses in communication, psychology, chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, algebra, statistics, nutrition, world food patterns, research, and professional exploration and development.  Community Nutrition students complete an experiential learner of experience in a community nutrition agency.

A Community Nutrition major also takes additional communication courses, electives or a minor, and selects either: 1) foods and food science, food service systems production and management, and advanced nutrition or: 2) sports nutrition, drugs and society, aging, and the family.

In addition to the courses required of both majors, a dietetic student completes foods and food science, food service systems production and management, medical nutrition therapy, supervised practice experience, and other professional courses.

The University of North Dakota Coordinated Program in Dietetics is currently granted accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of the American Dietetic Association, 120 S. Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60606, 312-899-5400.

This specialized accrediting agency is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education as a reliable authority for determining the quality of dietetics education programs.
