What is Cooperative Education?
- The Cooperative Education Experience (Co-op) in Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of North Dakota is a joint venture between employers and higher education.
- The participating student earns elective credits for paid work experience in a variety of settings.
- Students have the opportunity to perform skills learned in prior and concurrent Nutrition and Dietetics courses while under the guidance of agency staff.
- Each learning/working experience is individualized according to the student's prior academic and work experiences and the needs of the employer.
Why Participate in CO-OP?
By participating in the program, the student has the opportunity to:
- Develop good professional work habits.
- Earn additional funds to support their college education.
- Apply classroom learning to a realistic work setting and earn academic credit.
- Gain valuable work experience and professional contacts that will help the student in seeking employment after graduation.
Who is Eligible to Apply?
- Majoring in either Dietetics or Community Nutrition
- G.P.A. of 2.5 or better
- Completion of 45 credits including 7-9 N&D credits
- Approval of N&D Co-op Director
Types of CO-OP:
- Parallel: Student works at Co-op job part-time while attending regular classes during the fall and spring semesters.
- Alternating: Student works full-time for one semester, then attends UND full-time the next semester.
- Summer: Student is enrolled in a Co-op experience rather than classes during the summer.
How Many Credits?
- 120-300 work hours per semester or summer session (8-20 hours per week) equals one credit.
- 1-6 credits per semester.
- Repeatable up to 12 credits.
