COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

N500: Theories and Concepts in Nursing. 3 credits. The focus of this core course is on analysis of current nursing and related theories and concepts which guide clinical practice, curriculum development, research, and nursing administration.

N502: Evidence for Practice. 3 credits. Pre- or corequisites: N500 and statistics. The course emphasizes the application of basic research concepts to the building of evidence-based practice in nursing. Advanced competencies are developed in searching and evaluating the literature, examining the merit of different types and levels of evidence, and analyzing the generalizability and implications for clinical practice.

N523: Health Promotion Through the Lifespan. 3 credits. Prerequisites: N510, 556, 586 or consent of instructor. Paradigms in health promotion, health detection and disease prevention across the lifespan are used in the synthesis of theory and research-driven primary care interventions. A clinical/laboratory component is included.

N544: Managed Advanced Nurse Practice. 2 credits. Pre-Requisites or co-requisites: N526, 552 OR 553. Students will develop a nurse practice portfolio/plan based on an analysis of the business aspects of health care delivery for solo and partnership arrangements in advanced practice nursing.

N546: Advanced PHN I. 4 credits. Pre-Requisites: N500, N523, N556. Co-Requisite: N530. This course introduces concepts that are foundational to advanced PHN practice and population health. The community assessment process and program planning and implementation are a major focus of the course. Evidence-based advanced PHN interventions at the individual/family, community, and systems levels are analyzed.

N547: Advanced PHN Practicum I. 4 credits. Pre-Requisite or Co-Requisite: N546. The focus of this course is on application of foundational concepts of advanced PHN practice. Students will conduct a community assessment and based upon the analysis of the assessment, develop a population health program plan that will address the concerns identified in the assessment and incorporate evidence-based advanced PHN interventions. Written and oral communication skills are emphasized.

N548: Advanced PHN II . 3 credits. Pre-Requisites: N546, N547, N572, N530.
Pre or Co-Requisites: N526, N550, N552. This course focuses on the leadership role of advanced PHN practice. Public health and community-based organizational assessment, program monitoring and evaluation, quality improvement, and management of multiple projects are emphasized. Concepts of leadership in public and community health and collaborative interdisciplinary practice are discussed. Health policy, law and ethics as they relate to public health are explored. In addition, advanced PHN leadership in rural areas and in disaster/emergency preparedness and management are discussed.

N549: Advanced PHN Practicum II. 3 credits. Pre-Requisites: N548. This course provides a capstone experience in advanced PHN practice. Students are expected to integrate knowledge from all of their previous coursework into an applied practicum experience in population health.

N550: Global Public Health Issues. 2 credits. Pre-Requisites: N556. This course focuses on population health issues at a global level. Differences in population health status between developing and developed countries are explored. Special emphasis is placed on war as a public health issue and the global impact of AIDS.

N554: Managed Advanced Nurse Practice Managed Advanced Nurse Practice. 2 credits. Pre- or corequisites: N526, 552, and 553. Students will develop a nurse practice portfolio/plan based on an analysis of the business aspects of health care delivery for solo and partnership arrangements in advanced practice nursing.

N556: Epidemiology. 3 credits. Concepts and methods for the study of patterns of health and disease populations.

N563: Education in Advanced Practice. 1-2 credits. The course focuses on theories of teaching and learning as well as curriculum and program development and techniques of evaluation. The educator role of the advanced practice nurse in a variety of settings and with diverse cultural and socioeconomic groups is examined. Nurse practitioners take the course for 1 credit and attend the first 7.5 weeks. (NP student may elect to take the entire course). The Clinical Nurse Specialist students take the course for 2 credits and attend the full 15 weeks.

N572: Diverse Vulnerable Populations. 3 credits. Students will explore a wide range of concepts as they apply to diverse and vulnerable populations. The focus of the course is on understanding concepts and principles important to nursing when doing researching, planning health care, and developing health policy.

N592: Advanced PHN Practicum III. 4 credits. Prerequisites: N548 and N549. This course provides a capstone experience in advanced PHN practice. Students are expected to integrate knowledge from all of their previous coursework into an applied practicum experience in population health and to evaluate population health programs.
