The Gerontological Nurse Practitioner (GNP) and Clinical Nurse Specialist (GCNS) specialization educates nurses for advanced practice preparation to address the complex health care needs of older adults in our state as well as the nation. The Master of Science degree course of study is five semesters which includes one summer, is totally online and can be taken full or part time. Students complete more than 600 hours of clinical experience in their own home communities or as near as possible and will partner with experienced nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists or physicians. Enrollment is limited.
Students obtain extensive knowledge in theories of aging and gerontological nursing. They become skilled and knowledgeable in providing interventions necessary for health promotion, managing complex health conditions, and working effectively with interdisciplinary teams to provide care and services for older adults in long term care facilities, transitional care units, assisted living facilities as well as acute care, independent or clinic settings.
Students who pursue the GNP or GCNS complete the required courses and are eligible for the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) examination for certification as a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner or Gerontological Clinical Nurse Specialist |
