Q. How do I apply to the Gerontology Nursing Specialization?
A. The application for admission to the Graduate Nursing program can be accessed and submitted to the UND Graduate School at http://www.und.edu/dept/grad/ or use the link Admission/Application.

Q.  What are the Admission requirements?
A.  A baccalaureate degree in nursing from an NLN or CCNE accredited nursing program. Graduates from non-accredited or foreign schools are evaluated individually; Undergraduate or graduate; statistics course; Minimum GPA of at least 3.00 for the last two years of baccalaureate study; Current RN licensure; One year experience as registerd nurse, prefered; Successful interview.

Q.  Can I apply if I am an RN with an Associate Degree?
A. Students with an Associate Degree in Nursing may enter this specialization through the RN to MS track. Please see the RN to MS program: http://www.nursing.und.edu/ grad/RNtoMS.cfm

Q.  When are applications being accepted?
A. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. A complete application must be on file in the Graduate School at least a month before Fall, Spring or Summer term.

Q. How long does it take to complete the program?
A.  The course of study as a full-time student is 5 semesters which includes one summer.  Students can choose to do part-time study which may be completed over nine semesters which include three summer sessions.

Q. How many letters of recommendation are required?
A. Three letters of recommendation are required for admission to the graduate school. At least one of these letters of recommendation should be from your current, direct supervisor.

Q. Are all applicants invited for interviews?
A. All submitted applications are reviewed by our admissions committee. All aspects of the application are thoroughly evaluated by the committee, including GPA, clinical experience, reference letters, and the personal statement. Interview offers are extended to those applicants the committee feels are most qualified.

Q. What can I expect during the interview?
A. Your interview may be done either by telephone or you may come to campus.  The faculty will ask questions about your nursing experience, your goals, and other information to learn something about you.  It will last about 15-20 minutes depending on how many questions you may have.

Q.  Will I have to travel to campus during the program?
A. No. The courses for Gerontological Nursing are all offered on line through various means of distance delivery.  Faculty will make site-visits to you when you are completing your clinical practicum courses.

Q.Will I need to have a computer for this program?

Q.  Where will I do my clinical practicum?
A.  The College of Nursing will help you select a qualified preceptor from your home community/region. If you have someone in mind, you may talk with them about serving in this capacity.  The College of Nursing faculty will interview and process all clinical preceptors. Clinical site visits are made by the College of Nursing faculty during your clinical experiences.

Q.  What is the anticipated cost for this program?
A.  Online courses are offered to all students, regardless of where they live, at the "in state" tuition rate. Please refer to: http://www.und.edu/dept/studentaccounts/html/ tuitionrates.htm this shows a full year of tuition for graduate students. In addition, students are charged a $500.00 Nursing Program Fee per semester for a full time student. This fee is prorated for part time students. Q.  Am I able to transfer credits?
A.  Graduate work is considered for transfer only on an individual basis and only after the student has completed satisfactory work in residence at UND.  The transfer credits are approved by the student’s  advisory committee and the Dean of the Graduate School and are included in the program of study for the UND graduate degree.  Only those transfer credits will be recorded on the UND transcript.  If you plan to include transfer credits in your program, make sure they can be applied to your degree. Up to 8 credits of eligible transfer work is acceptable with a grade of B or better.

Q. What can I do with a Masters in Gerontology Nursing?
A.  Jobs/Roles of GNP or GCNS GNPs work in collaboration with physicians in a variety of settings, the most common providing primary care to elders in long term care facilities, transitional care units, and assisted living facilities. GNPs also work in ambulatory clinics, health maintenance organizations, and in independent or specialty practices.
The GCNS possess expertise about the nursing care of elderly at various points along the health continuum. The GCNS serves as a clinical expert in the planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care standards. A significant role of the GCNS is providing staff, patient and family education, identifying clinical research opportunities, and developing and/or coordinating programs specific to the needs of elders.
