Students experience six weeks of clinical, at 32 hours per week, working closely with a preceptor to learn the role of the professional nurse. The Practicum coordinator will meet with the first semester senior class the semester prior to rotation through the course. The application deadline will be set, choices are reviewed, and an opportunity to have questions answered will be provided.
When can I request a clinical site for my practicum experience?
The Practicum coordinator will provide details when meeting with the senior I class as a whole. A student request form for a currently available practicum site may be found and downloaded (in pdf) here - Practicum Request Form.
What are the requirements for Practicum?
Each agency has different requirements. Many are outlined on this website. The Practicum coordinator will communicate additional requirements to you as your choice is confirmed. Some agencies require application in advance, including submission of personal objectives, before they will consider your request. An absolute requirement is that verifications and CPR (as outlined in CON policy) must be current, with copies on file at the CON prior to the start of clinicals.
What am I allowed to do at my clinical site while in Practicum?
Students follow agency policy while in clinicals. A number of agencies supply guidelines and some orientation materials in advance that you will need to complete before arriving there. Others provide instruction and orientation once you’ve arrived. You will have a preceptor and another contact person within the agency to answer questions about what students are allowed to do.
